Every wondered how to sell a Blogspot blog? While agreed, this platform can be an excellent medium to earn money from, since it involves no cost whatsoever – there are complications if you’re looking to make a larger profit by selling it. Here’s a guest post about doing just that.
One would see a whole lot of people (who are generally bloggers) asking around about an exact number to denote the worth of their blog. My mailbox is flooded with such inquiries for buying and selling. While it’s difficult to evaluate the potential of the blog as a viable product, in terms of its quality and traffic inflow – it can be sold. But in most of the cases it is really difficult to sell the blog.
For instance selling a Blogspot property is very difficult and risky as well, the reason being that the person is not the actual owner of the blog. The person holds right only to the content but not to the blog itself. It in fact is the property of Google alone. If one reads the terms of service of Blogspot the very first paragraph makes it clear. It states:
Google also reserves the right to modify, suspend or discontinue the Service with or without notice at any time and without any liability to you.
What do you infer? The blog belongs to Google and it has the right to close it down that too without serving a notice to you. No one would be ready to take the risk of buying such a blog. It just doesn’t make sound business sense for somebody looking to make an investment.
Another clause that intimidates the buyers is this one:
No Resale of the Service. Unless expressly authorized in writing by Google, you agree not to reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, trade, resell or exploit for any commercial purposes (a) any portion of the Service, (b) use of the Service, or (c) access to the Service.
You however have the option of selling it without the knowledge of Google but if the company comes to know about it then the result will be disastrous. If you check out the 1000 recently sold online properties on Flippa you will find a similarity in all of them. Not even one of those properties depended on the Blogspot platform. Don’t worry though, that in no way means that it never happens. I’ve seen a lot of transactions take place involving the platform. The sole reason being that they attract a lot of cash. This convinces the buyer to take the risk of getting noticed and closing down.
These clauses do not mean that you can’t sell the online property you’ve worked on for so long. The situation demands a little effort from you. As mentioned earlier the content is solely yours. You can take your posts out of the blog and host it on your website before selling.
You or a third party licensor, as appropriate, retain all patent, trademark and copyright to any Content you submit, post or display on or through Google services and you are responsible for protecting those rights, as appropriate.
So use this right to host your content on your very own website, with a custom domain name. It is after all the posts and comments that brings in the revenue in the first place. Don’t worry, your the buyer will buy it anyway.
Follow the steps mentioned below to do this:
- First buy a unique domain name.
- Next step is to get a company to host all of this, which includes all the content and rich media.
- Once you get a company to host, WordPress has to be installed on this domain.
- When this is done import all the articles, images, videos, etc of your blog. This can be done by using the IMPORT option offered by WordPress. Let us know if you encounter any problems in the comments below.
- Redirect your blog to your new domain.
Apart from this option there is also an another option available for you to sell your blog. That is to get your Blogger account to point towards a particular custom URL. To do this follow the following steps:
- Dashboard
- Settings
- Publishing
- Switch to: Custom domain.
This has a downside as well. If you follow this your blog will still be hosting the content. But again the everything you have ever published online on this particular blog is yours and not Google’s.
